IEM Won the Bid to host the ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress 2020 and the 46th General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) through its commercial arm IEMTC has successfully won the BID to host the ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress (WTC) 2020 and the 46th General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There were three bidders namely Australia, India and Malaysia. The Bid Documents were submitted and accepted in January 2017 by ITA. The winning team consisting Ir. Dr. Ooi Teik Aun, Chairman Organizing Committee, Ir. Tan Yean Chin, President of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia, Ir. Khoo Chee Min, Deputy Chairman Organizing Committee and Ir. Ong Sang Woh, Secretary Cum Treasurer Tunnelling and Underground Space Technical Division (TUSTD). The team arrived in Bergen, Norway on Friday night 9th June 2017. On Sunday 11th June 2017 the team with Bid Document weighing more than 100Kg attended the 43rd ITA-AITES General Assembly I where the documents were distributed to the Member Nations as well as the ITA-AITES Executive Committee members. Bid Presentations by the three candidates were made on Sunday 11th June 2017 at the 43rd General Assembly I. The timely arrival of Mr. Edward Lim Chee Chong of Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) on 13th June 2017 is a blessing. On Tuesday 13th June 2017 the three candidates jointly hosted a dinner at an exclusive restaurant located at the city’s mountain top. The Candidates were given time to make their presentations before the dinner. The Malaysian team with the support of Mr. Edward Lim presented the video and Ir. Dr. Ooi announced to the guests present that the Malaysian Government has confirmed the financial grant to WTC 2020. On Wednesday 14th June 2017 voting took place at the ITA-AITES 43rd General Assembly II and IEM Malaysia secured 25 votes with Australia closely behind with 23 votes and India with 4 votes was eliminated in round 1.
In the second round of voting IEM Malaysia secured 30 votes to beat Australia with 22 votes. The ITA President, Prof. Tarcisio Celestino, declared that the World Tunnel Congress and the 46th General Assembly will be held in Malaysia in 2020. After the announcement of result the Organizing Chairman Ir. Dr. Ooi Teik Aun gave a speech to thank all those who voted for Malaysia and extended the warmest welcome to all present to attend WTC 2020 in Kuala Lumpur and visit Malaysia. Ir. Dr. Ooi also made special effort to welcome Australia and India to attend WTC 2020 in Kuala Lumpur and visit Malaysia.
Prior to coming to Bergen, The President of IEM Ir. Tan Yean Chin and Ir. Dr. Ooi Teik Aun welcomed about 400 participants and over 20 exhibitors to the first Southeast Asian Conference and Exhibition in Tunnelling and Underground Space (SEACETUS) at Dorsett Grand Subang hotel in Subang Jaya, Malaysia from the 18th to 19th April 2017. “Good organisation, choice and quality of the presentations at the conference, together with past and future development of underground space in the region with innovative, challenging and outstanding projects are reasons why Kuala Lumpur wants to host the WTC 2020” reported by Tunnel Talk June 2017 issue. IEM June 2017 Bulletin also carried story of the successful SEACETUS 2017 and why IEM is keen to host WTC 2020 in Malaysia.
In 1999 a Protem Committee on Tunnelling and Underground Space Technical Division (TUSTD) was form in The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) with the encouragement of International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). Ir. Dr. Ooi Teik Aun was elected the Protem Chairman. In 2000 TUSTD was inaugurated and Ir. Dr. Ooi was elected Founder Chairman. At the same time a one day seminar on Tunnelling and Trenchless Technology was held. In 2006 IEM held the first International Conference and Exhibition on Tunnelling and Underground Space (ICETUS 2006) to coincide with the opening of the SMART Tunnel. In 2011 IEM again held ICETUS 2011 in conjunction with the launching of Interstate Pahang- Selangor Raw Water Transfer project. In 2015, ICETUS 2015 was held to coincide with the substantial completion of KVMRT-SBK line. The Variable Density Tunnel Boring Machine (VDTBM) was invented to overcome the sinkhole and blowout problems encountered during tunnelling in Kuala Lumpur Limestone Formation in the SMART project. This invention is the first-of-its-kind innovation in the world and was jointly developed by MMC-GAMUDA and Herrenknecht, a German TBM Manufacturer. The tunnelling industry in Malaysia is ready to join the world league in Innovations and Sustainable Underground serving Global Connectivity.
